AppleCare for Macbooks: Yay or nay?
AppleCare is insurance, no different than car insurance. The purpose of AppleCare is to spread the cost of repair across a subscriber pool, some of whom will need for repairs and others not.
As is the case with any other insurance, the question of whether AppleCare is "worth it" depends on your ability to self-insure and your assessment of risk. If you can afford the cost of repair without financial strain, it might make sense to self-insure rather than purchase AppleCare.
Risk assessment is trickier. If your MacBook is going to sit on a desk, that's one thing. If your MacBook is going to be lugged around in a backpack and used in all sorts of situations, that's another thing. And accidents can happen even it you are "a very mature guy". Take a look at how you plan to use your MacBook and factor that into your decision.
I self-insure. My risk is high because I use my MacBook "on the go" and I don't expect them to last more than a few years before I break them one way or another. Accordingly, my MacBook is a base-level MBA that I can afford to replace without financial strain.
Your computer, your call.
